INTRODUCTION

In this first session I am going to introduce you to the main topic of this unit: the future.

So I thought a good way to do this could be reading a comic about two famous British novels: Nineteen Eighty-Four, by George Orwell, and Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley.

Both novels deal with dystopian futures, that is to say, futures in which society is supposed to be perfect but it is not. On the contrary, society is strongly opressed by the government.

Click here to read the comic.

If you are interested in knowing more about these books, you can see the presentation that we saw in class here.

In addition, here you have some useful links about both novels:

    Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four
     - Read the book online
     - Wikipedia's article on Nineteen Eighty-Four
     - Video: plot of the book in 60 seconds
     - Information about the film

    Huxley's Brave New World:

So after learning so much about these futuristic novels, I encourage you to think about this:
.    Do you think these authors were right when they predicted the future? Why?
.    Which future (Orwell’s or Huxley’s) do you think is more likely to happen? Why?

I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit of literature in this session and getting to know the two best dystopian novels ever written together with Fahrenheit 451: Nineteen Eighty-Four and Brave New World.

* EXTRA: Did you know that the film The Hunger Games is based on the dystopian novel of the same name?
